01Introduction

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized how we collect and process data from the physical world. However, the massive scale and distributed nature of IoT systems present significant challenges for data security, privacy, and integrity. Traditional centralized data management approaches are vulnerable to single points of failure and privacy breaches. Blockchain technology offers a promising solution by providing decentralized, tamper-proof data storage and transparent access control mechanisms. This paper presents SecureIoTChain, a novel blockchain-based framework specifically designed for IoT data management.

02Methodology & Architecture

SecureIoTChain employs a hierarchical blockchain architecture with three layers: device layer, edge layer, and cloud layer. The device layer consists of IoT sensors that generate and locally process data. The edge layer contains lightweight blockchain nodes that aggregate data from multiple devices and perform initial validation. The cloud layer maintains the main blockchain with complete transaction history. We implement a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism optimized for IoT environments, reducing energy consumption by 85% compared to proof-of-work. Smart contracts automate data access policies and ensure compliance with privacy regulations.

03Empirical Results & Validation

Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach across multiple metrics. The system achieved 99.7% data integrity even under adversarial conditions with 15% malicious nodes. Transaction throughput reached 5,000 transactions per second with average latency of 2.3 seconds. Energy consumption was reduced by 78% compared to traditional blockchain implementations. Privacy analysis showed that our framework successfully prevented data correlation attacks while maintaining data utility for legitimate analytics. The hierarchical architecture scaled efficiently to networks with over 100,000 IoT devices.

04Conclusion & Future Work

SecureIoTChain demonstrates that blockchain technology can effectively address the security and privacy challenges of large-scale IoT deployments. The hierarchical architecture provides the scalability needed for real-world IoT applications while maintaining the security guarantees of blockchain. Our framework opens new possibilities for trusted IoT data sharing across organizational boundaries. Future work will focus on integrating machine learning capabilities for automated threat detection and developing interoperability standards for cross-platform deployment.
